Coordination for a Summit Within the Year

The Japanese government is scheduled to hold a Korea-China-Japan foreign ministers' meeting in Tokyo on the 22nd, NHK reported on the 15th.

The meeting will be attended by Cho Tae-yeol, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Korea, Wang Yi, Director of the Central Foreign Affairs Office of the Chinese Communist Party and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Takeishi Iwaya, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

The foreign ministers of the three countries are expected to discuss cooperation measures in various fields such as human exchange, economic cooperation, and measures to address low birth rates. They are also expected to continue coordination for holding the Korea-China-Japan summit within the year.

The Korea-China-Japan foreign ministers' meeting is taking place about five months after the last one held in Busan in November of last year.

NHK reported that, coinciding with Director Wang's visit to Japan, the Japanese government is also considering holding a 'high-level economic dialogue' to discuss economic cooperation between the two countries' ministers along with a China-Japan foreign ministers' meeting.

If the high-level economic dialogue between Japan and China takes place, it will be the first in six years since the Beijing meeting in 2019. NHK said the Japanese government is seeking to resolve issues such as China's import ban on Japanese seafood products, which was implemented following the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (referred to by the Japanese government as 'treated water').
