Gadeokdo New Airport Begins Compensation for Graves on Incorporated Land... Notice of Relocation

Notice for Reporting Grave Relatives Over a Three-Month Period

Compensation for graves located within the land to be incorporated for the new Gadeokdo Airport will officially begin.

The city of Busan (Mayor Park Hyungjun) announced that it will officially begin the process of compensating for graves by publicly notifying the commencement of grave relocation within the land to be incorporated for the Gadeokdo New Airport construction project on the 14th.

Previously, in August of last year, the city of Busan commissioned a survey of graves within the land to be incorporated for the Gadeokdo New Airport construction project and carried out the investigation through a professional service provider.

To ensure accuracy, the professional grave survey company conducted a six-month investigation, confirming the existence of 3,228 graves within the incorporated land. Notably, over 2,700 graves were found in the 2.03 million square meter area of Daehang-dong. Most of these were identified as graves without known relatives. Due to the long period of neglect, many of the graves were difficult to identify.

The city of Busan plans to carry out a public notice of grave relocation for the surveyed graves within the incorporated land until June 13 to locate any relatives.

The public notice period for grave relocation will last for three months, with two separate announcements, and relatives of the graves will be guided to report to the city during this period.

Approximately 240 graves have been identified as having relatives. The relatives (stakeholders) of these graves will be guided to submit a report (including documents such as family relationship certificates, genealogies, grave registration forms, and verification statements) to the New Airport Project Support Team during the notice period.

For reported graves, starting in June, individual notifications will be sent to the relatives to guide them on directly relocating the graves and receiving compensation for grave loss.

According to relevant laws, after the public notice: ▲ For graves with relatives, compensation will be completed once the relatives directly relocate the graves and receive the compensation for grave loss; ▲ For graves without known relatives, the city plans to directly relocate, cremate, and enshrine the graves through a contracted service provider.

For graves without known relatives, the city of Busan is preparing for direct relocation in accordance with relevant laws. Graves not reported within the notice period will be regarded as unclaimed, and after obtaining the necessary permits according to the law, the city will directly relocate, cremate, and enshrine them through a professional company, placing the remains in a nearby columbarium for five years.

Heo Namsik, head of the Busan New Airport Promotion Headquarters, stated, "We will do our utmost to ensure the grave compensation process proceeds smoothly in accordance with relevant laws, so that the Gadeokdo New Airport, the global gateway of the southern region, can begin construction as soon as possible."
