Chinese company Huawei has been accused of bribing current and former members of the European Parliament under the pretext of lobbying, according to Belgian media outlets including Le Soir on the 13th (local time).

According to reports, the Belgian federal prosecutor's office stated on the same day, "Police conducted raids at multiple locations in Belgium related to corruption charges," adding that "Huawei's Brussels headquarters was also included." The prosecutor's office also said, "Several individuals have been arrested for investigation in connection with corruption charges," and searches were also conducted in Portugal.

Investigators believe that Huawei lobbyists have been providing bribes to members of parliament since 2021 with the aim of influencing the EU decision-making process.

Sources indicated that about 15 current and former members of parliament may be involved. If charges against sitting members are confirmed, the investigation authorities are expected to officially request the European Parliament to lift parliamentary immunity. A spokesperson for the European Parliament told Euronews, "We are aware of the information," and added, "The Parliament always fully cooperates when requested by judicial authorities."

In 2022, the European Parliament's reputation was severely damaged when some current and former members were prosecuted for accepting bribes in countries such as Qatar and Morocco. Subsequently, under the leadership of Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, efforts were made to strengthen the code of ethics and conduct for members to prevent recurrence of corruption.
