On the 13th (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump warned that if the European Union (EU) does not immediately repeal the '50% tariff' imposed on American whiskey, the United States will impose a 200% tariff on alcoholic beverages produced in EU countries.
In a post on social media, President Trump stated, "The EU, which was created solely to take advantage of the United States, has just imposed an unpleasant 50% tariff on whiskey," adding, "If this tariff is not immediately repealed, the U.S. will promptly impose a 200% tariff on wine, champagne, and alcoholic products from France and other EU countries."
The EU introduced retaliatory tariffs after the U.S. imposed a 25% tariff on global steel, aluminum, and related products starting on the 12th, including a 50% tariff on American whiskey as part of the first phase of measures to be implemented from the 1st of next month.
With Trump's 'tariff bomb' prompting Europe to introduce retaliatory tariffs and President Trump warning of a counterattack, there is growing concern that a global 'tariff war' centered on the U.S. and Europe could intensify.
