China reaffirmed its strong opposition on the 13th to the United States' imposition of a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum.
At a regular briefing that day, Chinese Ministry of Commerce spokesperson He Yongqian stated, "China, like other countries, strongly opposes this tariff adjustment," adding, "China has already announced its position on this matter."
Spokesperson He said, "China believes this measure is unilateralism and protectionism implemented under the pretext of 'national security,'" and added, "We urge the United States to promptly withdraw the measure."
Regarding plans for trade talks between the U.S. and China, he emphasized, "The relevant departments of both countries continue to communicate," and expressed hope that "the United States will return to the right path of resolving issues through dialogue and negotiation."
Earlier, after the United States began imposing a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum derivative products it imports, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced at a regular briefing that it would take necessary related measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests.
According to the U.S. International Trade Administration (ITA), as of last year, China exported $800 million worth of steel to the United States, ranking tenth among all countries. Although China is the world's largest steel producer, the volume imported by the United States is relatively small according to statistics. However, it is known that a significant amount is exported to the U.S. through indirect routes via third countries.
