Samyoung to Supply Insulation Films for Secondary Batteries to Cylindrical Battery Manufacturers... "Leap to Battery Material Company"

Samyoung, a specialist in ultra-thin capacitor film manufacturing, announced on the 12th that it will officially supply insulation films for secondary batteries to a global cylindrical battery company.

Samyoung is the only domestic producer of capacitor films, a core material for existing capacitors, and ranks third globally in production scale. With the expansion of the electric vehicle market, the capacitor market has experienced shortages, leading to significant growth in operating profits for three consecutive years. To further penetrate the global electric vehicle market, Samyoung has invested approximately 40 billion KRW since 2021 in a new production line construction project.

During the construction of the new line, Samyoung secured unique production technology for more advanced ultra-thin capacitor film manufacturing. Production capacity increased from an average of 600 tons per month to 1,000 tons, with additional expansions planned to increase monthly production to 1,600 tons. Alongside this, in response to growing demand for new high-tech applications, the existing production lines have begun full-scale supply of insulation films for secondary batteries and ABF films for semiconductor release.

Samyoung’s capacitor films offer superior price competitiveness and efficiency compared to films used in existing batteries, leading to selection by global battery companies and ongoing mass production for cylindrical battery applications. It is expected that supply will expand to prismatic and pouch-type batteries, resulting in a rapid increase in secondary battery volumes.

According to the company, films used in semiconductors, specifically ABF films for release, have completed final product application testing, and sales are expected to begin in the second quarter. Samyoung’s capacitor production equipment can mass-produce films ranging from ultra-thin to thick, providing strong global competitiveness.

Lee Seok-jun, Chairman of Samyoung, stated, "Each piece of equipment for the new line costs over 40 billion KRW and requires 1 to 2 years or more for installation. Due to the high entry barriers of advanced thin-film technology, ultra-thin capacitor films and insulation films for secondary batteries and semiconductors boast high profit margins." He added, "Based on our unique technological capabilities and production capacity, we will leap from a capacitor film company to a high value-added secondary battery and semiconductor materials company."

He continued, "From the second quarter, deliveries of ultra-thin capacitor films to global automakers are scheduled, which will rapidly accelerate performance growth."

Meanwhile, Samyoung’s subsidiary, Samyoung Heavy Industries, supplies ship engine parts such as cylinder liners, gas receivers, and strong back rings to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and others. With the recent boom in the shipbuilding industry and a surge in shipbuilding demand, orders are secured through 2030, which is expected to contribute to the performance growth of Samyoung Heavy Industries.
