The Korea Post (Korea Post Headquarters) announced on the 12th that it will pilot-operate the cash delivery service in Sancheong, Hamyang, Geochang, and Hapcheon in Gyeongnam. This service is scheduled to start this month after signing a business agreement between the relevant local governments and the post offices.

Cash delivery is a postal service where post office delivery workers deliver local government subsidies in cash, introduced to enhance convenience for the elderly.

Until now, subsidies were paid via bank transfer, making it difficult for elderly people who have trouble visiting financial institutions to use the subsidies in a timely manner. Typical examples include recipients who live far from financial institutions or have mobility difficulties.

However, using the cash delivery service is expected to resolve such inconveniences and difficulties. This service has the advantage of being safe as the delivery worker delivers the cash face-to-face.

The delivery worker personally delivers the mail to the recipient and goes through a procedure to mutually confirm the amount received. If the cash is lost during delivery, the post office compensates the full amount, and prior notifications such as delivery notice text messages are sent before delivery.

Korea Post will pilot the cash delivery service while simultaneously operating welfare registered mail service and expired medicine collection projects. The welfare registered mail service is implemented in the Gyeongnam region to collect basic data for providing welfare services.

Through these projects, Korea Post expects to provide community-based welfare services targeting residents in depopulated areas. After the pilot operation, the service will be evaluated, and plans to expand related services mainly in depopulated areas will also be considered.

Cho Haegun, head of Korea Post Headquarters, said, “We hope the pilot operation of the cash delivery service will resolve difficulties faced by local residents who have trouble visiting financial institutions,” and added, “Korea Post will continue to strive to reduce welfare blind spots in depopulated areas through the post office network.”
