KDCA Appoints 15 Committee Members
Including Central Government Officials and Injury Experts
On the 12th, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) announced the launch of the '1st National Injury Management Committee' at the KDCA headquarters in Osong, Chungbuk, and held its inaugural meeting.
'Injury' refers to physical or mental health problems or their sequelae caused by external risk factors such as various accidents, disasters, or poisoning. According to the 2023 mortality statistics, injury ranks fourth among all causes of death, following cancer, heart disease, and pneumonia. Compared to other diseases such as infectious and chronic diseases, injuries occur more frequently in younger populations, and due to the particularly high mortality and disability rates, the importance of prevention and systematic management is emphasized.
The National Injury Management Committee is a deliberative and decision-making body established under Article 7 of the 'Injury Prevention and Management Act (Injury Prevention Act),' which came into effect on January 24 this year. The 1st Committee, launched this time, will perform functions such as reviewing matters related to the national injury management system and policies, deliberating the 1st Comprehensive Injury Management Plan and annual implementation plans, for the next three years to ensure systematic injury prevention and management.
The committee consists of six civilian members with extensive experience and expertise in emergency medicine, traumatology, preventive medicine, and emergency rescue, as well as director-level officials from eight related central administrative agencies including the Ministry of Education, Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Ministry of Health and Welfare, Ministry of Employment and Labor, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, National Fire Agency, and the KDCA. The KDCA Commissioner serves as the chairperson.
At the 1st meeting, following the presentation of appointment letters to the committee members, the committee deliberated and approved the ▲Operational Rules of the National Injury Management Committee and ▲Selection of the entrusted institution for the establishment and operation of the Central Injury Management Center, and the KDCA reported on the plan to establish the national injury management promotion system.
Starting with the committee's launch, the KDCA plans to designate the Central Injury Management Center within this month and establish and announce the '1st Comprehensive Injury Management Plan (2026?2030)' in September. Additionally, from next year, the plan is to operate a nationwide injury prevention and management system by establishing regional injury management centers in 17 cities and provinces, centered on the Central Injury Management Center and regional disease response centers.
Ji Young-mi, Commissioner of the KDCA, said, "I am honored that the launch of the National Injury Management Committee has created a platform where top experts in the injury field and government agencies responsible for key policies can discuss together," adding, "We will make every effort to build a healthy society free from injury concerns."
