Samsung Electronics QLED TV, Cadmium-Free Quantum Dot Technology Certified

The Era of Eco-Friendly Quantum Dot TVs
Free from Harmful Substances

Samsung Electronics' QLED (Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diode) TV has secured viewing environment safety by receiving certification for its 'cadmium-free' quantum dot technology excellence from a global certification body.

On the 12th, Samsung Electronics announced that it obtained certification from the global certification organization SGS for 'Quantum Dot Film,' confirming non-detection of cadmium and compliance with hazardous substance restriction guidelines. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, SGS is an institution that provides strict safety standards across industries such as electronics, food, and environment.

Samsung Electronics officially demonstrated the excellence of its 'Quantum Dot Film' technology through this test and explained that it met the European Union (EU) Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive, thereby gaining recognition for the safety of the viewing environment.

Samsung Electronics began researching quantum dot technology in 2001 and has led innovation in the global display market through continuous development investment. In 2014, it developed the world's first 'cadmium-free' quantum dot material and launched TVs applying this technology the following year, leading the eco-friendly display market. In particular, it achieved technological advancement by securing about 150 patents through the realization of cadmium-free nanocrystal materials. It is evaluated as having opened the era of quantum dot TVs that consider safety with eco-friendly materials free from hazardous substances.

QLED TVs, recognized as premium products in the global TV market, sold 2.75 million units worldwide last year. They accounted for 10.9% of the total TV market, surpassing a 10% market share for the first time.

Son Tae-yong, Vice President of Samsung Electronics' Visual Display Business Division, said, "Samsung QLED TVs are based on safe technology that meets hazardous substance restriction standards as well as excellent picture quality," adding, "With safety proven through SGS certification, we will continue to develop sustainable eco-friendly display technology."
