A 46km Section in Pyeongchang-dong and Buam-dong This Year
Entire Jongno-gu to Be Covered by 2027
Jongno-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jeong Munheon) will conduct an "Underground Road Void Investigation" throughout the district by 2027 to prevent ground subsidence accidents.
Since accidents caused by ground subsidence or road collapse can lead to significant casualties, the investigation will be carried out across the entire district to thoroughly prevent related incidents. The target area covers a total of 231 km, including 193 km of roadways and 38 km of sidewalks.
According to the Special Act on Underground Safety Management, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) must be used every five years to check for voids in underground facilities and surrounding ground.
To implement more thorough measures this time, Jongno-gu has divided the district into five zones (Zone 1 - Pyeongchang-dong, Buam-dong; Zone 2 - Cheongunhyoja-dong, Samcheong-dong, Muak-dong, Gyo-nam-dong; Zone 3 - Gahoe-dong, Hyehwa-dong, Ihwa-dong; Zone 4 - Sajik-dong, Jongno 1-4 ga-dong; Zone 5 - Jongno 5-6 ga-dong, Changsin 1-3 dong, Sungin 1-2 dong).
To enhance the effectiveness of the investigation, Zone 1 will be surveyed this year, Zones 2 and 3 next year, and Zones 4 and 5 sequentially in 2027. This year's target area is a total of 46 km, including 45 km of roadways and 1 km of sidewalks in Pyeongchang-dong and Buam-dong, which belong to Zone 1.
Jongno-gu will conduct a first-stage investigation using ground-penetrating radar, followed by a second-stage investigation including drilling and endoscopic filming. If voids are found, eco-friendly fluid fillers will be injected for prompt restoration.
District Mayor Jeong Munheon stated, "To prevent ground subsidence accidents, we are conducting underground void investigations by dividing Jongno into five zones," adding, "We will strive to create a safe road environment to protect the lives and property of our residents."
