Hyundai Motor Company has decided to build its own hydrogen fuel cell factory in Ulsan. Until now, the hydrogen fuel cells used in Hyundai's hydrogen electric vehicles have been produced by a subsidiary of Hyundai Mobis, but this time Hyundai Motor has announced plans to produce hydrogen fuel cells directly.

According to industry sources on the 11th, Hyundai Motor has confirmed the construction of a next-generation hydrogen fuel cell factory at its Ulsan plant. This factory will be the first hydrogen fuel cell factory in Korea operated directly by Hyundai Motor. It is scheduled to be built on the site of the transmission factory within the Hyundai Motor Ulsan plant, with construction starting this year and mass production beginning in 2028.

In addition, Hyundai Motor is also producing hydrogen fuel cells overseas. Since 2023, it has been manufacturing hydrogen fuel cells for commercial vehicles with an annual capacity of 6,500 units at its Guangzhou plant in China.

Based on the establishment of the domestic hydrogen fuel cell factory, Hyundai Motor plans to accelerate the expansion of its hydrogen business. At the shareholders' meeting on the 20th, it will add "hydrogen business and other related businesses" to its articles of incorporation as a business purpose.

Last year, Hyundai Motor acquired all domestic hydrogen fuel cell business assets held by Hyundai Mobis. Accordingly, Hyundai Motor has decided to establish an independent production system for next-generation hydrogen fuel cells.
