Kim Dong-yeon: "Creating 'Opportunity Towns' in 3 Locations - Suwon Uman Tech, Yongin, and Indeokwon"

Gyeonggi Province will develop three sites?Suwon World Cup Stadium site, Yongin, and Indeokwon?into the Gyeonggi-style urban model called ‘Gyeonggi Opportunity Town.’

On the 11th, Gyeonggi Governor Kim Dong-yeon declared at the ‘Gyeonggi Opportunity Town 3 Major Projects Press Briefing’ held at the outdoor plaza of Suwon World Cup Stadium, "We are promoting the Opportunity Town project to create cities where lives improve."

■ Suwon Uman Technovalley

Gyeonggi Province decided to develop this site, which has long been unused as a sports facility and has been used as a parking lot, into an Opportunity Town in consultation with Suwon City and the World Cup Foundation.

This site is well-equipped with living infrastructure such as nearby universities and university hospitals, and the ‘World Cup Stadium Station,’ served by the Shinbundang Line and Indeokwon-Dongtan Line, will open. In particular, the plan is to create sports facilities that can generate synergy with the existing World Cup Stadium infrastructure and nurture it into a sports city that will lead the development of sports in South Korea. The development profits from the site will become a stable source of income for the World Cup Foundation and, furthermore, are expected by Gyeonggi Province to serve as a foundation for the development of sports in the province.

Gyeonggi Province expects that the development of Uman Technovalley will create 10,000 jobs. Governor Kim Dong-yeon forecasted, "Uman Technovalley will become a hub connecting the AI knowledge industry belt in southern Gyeonggi and the bio belt extending to northern Gyeonggi."

■ Yongin Platform City

The Yongin Platform City Opportunity Town will be developed as a future-oriented mixed self-sufficient city. It will provide a residential environment where jobs, commerce, culture, and leisure can be addressed in one place. The large-scale advanced industrial zone will form one axis of the AI industry belt and create jobs in future industries based on AI. Additionally, MICE facilities such as convention centers and hotels, along with commercial and cultural spaces, are expected by Gyeonggi Province to become a new landmark in southern Gyeonggi.

Nearby Guseong Station is served by two lines, GTX-A and Suin-Bundang Line, and is located above the Singal JC area where the Gyeongbu and Yeongdong Expressways pass. When 10,000 housing units are supplied on a site as large as the first Pangyo Technovalley, it will be developed as a sustainable urban model harmonizing workplaces and living spaces. Gyeonggi Province anticipates that 55,000 new jobs will be created once Platform City is established.

Governor Kim Dong-yeon stated, "Yongin Platform City will connect to Dongtan Technovalley, the semiconductor hub," adding, "We plan to create an ecosystem combining AI and the semiconductor industry."

■ Indeokwon Station Area Opportunity Town

The Indeokwon Opportunity Town aims to be a sustainable eco-friendly urban model. The introduction of geothermal energy and RE100 apartments, first implemented in an Opportunity Town, are regarded as advanced examples of a carbon-neutral town. The revolution in public transportation centered on the complex transfer facility is expected by Gyeonggi Province to play a significant role in reducing carbon emissions.

Indeokwon is a transportation hub currently served by Subway Line 4. With the future opening of the Indeokwon-Dongtan Line, Wolgot-Pangyo Line, and GTX-C Line, a ‘quadruple station area’ will be formed. Around the complex transfer center of this fourfold transportation network, a compact city applying advanced technology and design will be developed.

Gyeonggi Province expects that startups, venture companies, and commercial and leisure facilities will be established in this ultra-station area infrastructure, creating a total of about 5,000 jobs. Governor Kim Dong-yeon expressed his expectations, saying, "Indeokwon Opportunity Town will become a key link organically connecting the technovalleys in southern Gyeonggi."
