Kim Sanghoon, a member of the National Assembly from the Seo-gu district of Daegu (People Power Party), announced on the 10th that he has requested thorough inspections and on-site investigations by professional agencies from the Daegu Metropolitan Government and the Daegu Regional Environmental Office, in response to the recent series of wastewater leakage incidents at the Daegu Dyeing Industrial Complex.
There have already been five wastewater leakage accidents in the Daegu Seo-gu Dyeing Industrial Complex this year alone, raising anxiety among local residents. In particular, on the 8th, another incident occurred in which white wastewater with a foul odor was discharged through the Gongdancheon sewage pipeline, highlighting the severity of the environmental issues in the area.
Kim urged, “The Daegu Regional Environmental Office and Daegu Metropolitan Government must immediately strengthen joint on-site inspections, enforce strict punishment for those responsible, and implement fundamental measures to prevent recurrence, such as completely sealing facilities that could potentially leak wastewater.”
The Ministry of Environment and the Daegu Environmental Office plan to form a special joint inspection team to first investigate 19 businesses suspected of wastewater leakage during March, and to conduct a comprehensive inspection of all 107 textile dyeing businesses that discharge wastewater into the joint wastewater treatment plant. In addition, they will establish preventive measures by strictly warning companies in the dyeing industrial complex against any discharge outside of designated wastewater pipelines.
Kim stated, “I have proposed to Daegu Mayor Hong Joonpyo the prompt advancement of the delayed Seo-Daegu combined underground water and sewage treatment plant project, and the Daegu Metropolitan Government is also planning to complete the project by 2030.”
Kim added, “The Seo-Daegu combined underground water and sewage treatment plant project is a key initiative for protecting the environmental rights of Seo-gu residents and for the development of the Seo-Daegu station area. I expect the Daegu Metropolitan Government to actively pursue this project. We will do our utmost to establish measures to prevent recurrence, including thorough investigations, punishment of those responsible, and the establishment of a continuous monitoring system, for the sake of local residents who are anxious due to these wastewater leakage incidents.”
