Late to First Trial... Makes 'Merong' Gesture to Acquaintance During Hearing
Seokyungdeok: "Still Hasn't Come to His Senses"
"Insulted Korean History... Hope for a Proper Verdict"
Jewish-American YouTuber Johnny Somali (real name Ramsey Khaled Ismail) has been indicted on charges including obstruction of business and violation of minor offense laws, prompting Professor Seokyungdeok of Sungshin Women's University to urge, "A strong punishment should be imposed to set a good example."
On the 10th, Professor Se stated on his social media (SNS), "YouTuber Johnny Somali, who was indicted for various outrageous acts in Korea such as kissing the 'Statue of Peace,' has recently caused controversy by showing a bad attitude during the trial." The first hearing for Somali, originally scheduled to be held at 10:10 a.m. on the 7th at the Seoul Western District Court Criminal Division 1 (Judge Park Ji-won), reportedly started around 11:10 a.m. after he was an hour late.

Additionally, Somali attempted to enter the courtroom wearing a red hat with the slogan 'Make America Great Again' (MAGA), the campaign slogan of former U.S. President Trump, but was stopped due to court regulations. Furthermore, he displayed inappropriate behavior by smiling and making a 'merong' gesture toward an acquaintance seated in the courtroom gallery, and after the hearing, he made a controversial remark to reporters, saying, "Korea is a vassal state of America."
Professor Se criticized Somali's behavior, saying, "He still hasn't come to his senses," and emphasized, "This time, a strong punishment rather than a light one must be imposed to set a good example. Not only did he kiss the Statue of Peace, but he also insulted Korean history by showing the Rising Sun flag and shouting 'Takeshima, not Dokdo.'" He added, "I only hope that a proper final judgment will be made on this case so that such incidents never recur in Korea."
Previously, Somali had posted content showing disruptive behavior in public places overseas, as well as insulting locals through sexual harassment and profanity. In October last year, he disrupted business at a convenience store in Mapo-gu, Seoul, by playing music and dancing, and when an employee tried to stop him, he spilled cup noodle broth on the table and cursed. He also caused disturbances on buses and subways, drawing criticism from netizens. Somali admitted to all charges during this hearing.
