[Polpol News] Public Opinion Swings Ahead of Yoon's Impeachment... People Power Party and Democratic Party Within Margin of Error

Public opinion is fluctuating ahead of the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol. The approval ratings of the People Power Party and the Democratic Party of Korea have narrowed within the margin of error.


According to a poll released on the 10th by the polling firm Realmeter (commissioned by Energy Economy Newspaper, conducted over two days from the 5th to the 7th targeting 1,507 people aged 18 and over using an automated wireless phone response method, with a response rate of 6.4% and a sampling error of ±2.5 percentage points at a 95% confidence level), the People Power Party's approval rating rose by 5.2 percentage points from the previous week to 42.7%. The Democratic Party of Korea fell by 3.2 percentage points to 41.0%. The gap between the two parties' approval ratings is 1.7 percentage points, which is within the margin of error.

Last week, the Democratic Party led with 44.2%, ahead of the People Power Party's 37.6%, a difference of 6.6 percentage points outside the margin of error, but within one week, the gap narrowed to within the margin of error.


Opinions on regime change also narrowed. When asked about the "preferred next ruling power," 50.4% chose "regime change by the opposition party," which was 6.4 percentage points higher than the 44.0% who preferred "extension of the ruling party's term." In the same survey last week, regime change was at 55.1%, and regime extension was at 39.0%.


In regions such as Daejeon, Sejong, and Chungcheong, as well as Seoul, Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam, support for regime change declined, while support for regime extension increased.


Regarding the contentious issue between the ruling and opposition parties about whether to apply exceptions to the 52-hour workweek system for specific industries such as semiconductors, 57.8% of respondents supported the exception, while 27.1% opposed it.
