Boston Dynamics Robots to Begin Year-End Production... Focus on AI Training

Video Reveals AI Learning Process of Humanoid Robot Atlas
Boston Dynamics demonstrates sequencing technology for autonomous parts handling

Boston Dynamics, a robotics subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group, released a video on the 5th (local time) showcasing the AI learning process of the humanoid robot 'All New Atlas,' which is about to be deployed in production sites.

Last November, Boston Dynamics unveiled a video of the new Atlas moving engine cover parts to a mobile storage bin, demonstrating human-like work and presenting a blueprint for various potential applications.

The newly released video illustrates how the research team trained Atlas and utilized artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The team emphasized that the sequencing technology, which means 'arranging a series of work steps,' is key to the parts moving task performed by Atlas.

All efforts are focused on training Atlas to work autonomously based on the shape and position data of the parts it receives as input. Through this, Atlas is expected to flawlessly perform sequencing tasks by picking up the engine cover and placing it in the exact position using camera sensors and AI solutions.

In particular, Atlas is learning to recognize and transport irregularly shaped parts in dark manufacturing environments, as well as to understand and appropriately respond when problems arise. With 360-degree rotation capability, it can change direction and move faster, enabling more effective operation within its range of motion.

Boston Dynamics expects that deploying Atlas in simple repetitive tasks such as moving parts will reduce the burden on workers while improving productivity and efficiency. Starting with a pilot application of Atlas at Hyundai Motor Group’s production bases by the end of this year, various field tests are planned.

Zachary Jackowski, Boston Dynamics’ lead engineer overseeing robot development, said, "We are fortunate to collaborate with Hyundai Motor Group, a global leader in manufacturing," adding, "We look forward to researching more innovative robotics technologies based on Boston Dynamics’ outstanding hardware capabilities and Hyundai Motor Group’s manufacturing expertise."
