U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly considering relocating U.S. troops stationed in Germany to other Eastern European countries, according to foreign media reports.
On the 7th (local time), the British daily The Telegraph cited a source close to the White House, stating that the reason for the Trump administration's review of the redeployment of U.S. troops in Germany was that "President Trump was angry that they (Europe) continue to push for war."
President Trump was reportedly upset by the fact that while the U.S. is negotiating alone with Russia to end the Ukraine war, key European allies are expressing continued military support for Ukraine, causing a discord with the U.S.
The country most likely being considered as the new deployment location for the 35,000 U.S. troops currently stationed in Germany is Hungary. Although Hungary is a member of the EU and NATO, since Prime Minister Viktor Orb?n, who has a pro-Russian nationalist stance, came to power, he has repeatedly blocked decision-making processes in the EU and NATO. Orb?n is sometimes called the "Trump of Europe." Hungary has shown a pro-Russian stance several times regarding the Ukraine war.
Recently, right after the U.S. halted military support to Ukraine, at the EU special summit held on the 6th, European countries tried to show a "united resolution" on support for Ukraine, but Hungary ultimately refused, forcing the release of a separate "annex document" apart from the joint statement.
During President Trump's first term, the withdrawal of 12,000 U.S. troops from Germany was decided, but this was reversed under the Joe Biden administration.
Brian Hughes, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council (NSC), said regarding the rumors of U.S. troop redeployment from Germany, "There is no specific announcement imminent," but added, "The U.S. military always considers ways to deploy troops stationed around the world to best respond to current threats and align with our interests."
