Jeonnam Province Sees Increase in Fisheries Production... In 2024, the total production value of seafood in Jeollanam-do reached 3.5298 trillion won, an increase of 417.1 billion won compared to 2023. Considering the number of local fishermen (33,272) during the same period, this means that each person earned a high income of over 100 million won.


According to Jeollanam-do on the 8th, an analysis of the Fisheries Production Trends statistics from the National Statistical Portal (KOSIS) showed that the seafood production volume in 2024 decreased by 2.5% compared to the previous year, while the production value increased by 13.4%.


Although the production volume decreased, the production value increased due to a rise in the price of raw Gim at production sites driven by increased Gim exports, as well as higher catches of some high-value species such as yellow croaker.


By type of fishery, aquaculture recorded 2.2572 trillion won (1,706,336 tons), an increase of 452.2 billion won from the previous year; offshore fisheries recorded 912.9 billion won (140,312 tons), a decrease of 59.4 billion won; and inland fisheries recorded 359.7 billion won (15,261 tons), an increase of 24.3 billion won.


By item, fish recorded 1.3081 trillion won (130,810 tons), an increase of 51.1 billion won from the previous year; shellfish recorded 620.3 billion won (127,770 tons), a decrease of 94.9 billion won; seaweed recorded 1.1891 trillion won (1,565,563 tons), an increase of 462 billion won; crustaceans recorded 209.4 billion won (27,084 tons), an increase of 20.4 billion won; and other seafood recorded 202.9 billion won (10,682 tons), a decrease of 21.5 billion won.


By species, Gim recorded 958.8 billion won (427,138 tons), an increase of 440.3 billion won from the previous year; Miyeok recorded 90.8 billion won (551,616 tons), an increase of 9.3 billion won; abalone recorded 486.4 billion won (23,357 tons), a decrease of 49.3 billion won; salted shrimp recorded 70.3 billion won (14,597 tons), an increase of 13 billion won; and eel recorded 338.5 billion won (10,637 tons), an increase of 26.2 billion won.


Park Youngchae, Director of the Oceans and Fisheries Bureau of Jeollanam-do, said, "We will analyze the 2024 seafood production data to further discover high-income species and actively utilize it to establish fisheries development policies that enhance added value."
