A Large Data Center Opens in Gangnam Yangjae... "Optimizing Support for AI Technology"

KR1 Gangnam Data Center
Completion in June, Scheduled to Open in August

Singapore-based data center construction company 'Empirion Digital' will open a large-scale data center with a capacity of 40 megawatts (MW) in Gangnam this August. The facility is equipped with optimal infrastructure to support artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

An Empirion Digital representative stated this on the 6th at a seminar on AI data centers hosted by the global commercial real estate services firm 'Cushman & Wakefield Korea.'

The 'KR1 Gangnam Data Center' is located at 224 Yangjae-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul, with a total floor area of 60,000 square meters across three basement levels and nine above-ground floors. The construction of a large data center on Gangnam land is a very rare case in recent times.

The representative explained, "It holds a strategic location with close access to both Gangnam and Pangyo," adding, "It is far from residential areas and close to Yangjae IC, providing high connectivity to backbone communication networks and backhaul."

Founded in 2021, this is Empirion Digital's first data center construction project in Korea. The company has established a total of five data centers primarily in Asia, including Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand. The KR1 Gangnam Data Center has a capacity of 40 MW, of which 29.4 MW is used for IT equipment power consumption. The remainder is used to cool the heat generated by the equipment.

It supports high-density racks consuming 10 kW to over 40 kW per rack, and notably, the 7th and 8th floors will adopt a liquid cooling system capable of supporting up to 130 kW per rack for high-performance computing systems such as AI application development. The Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), which indicates the proportion of power consumed by IT equipment out of the total power consumed by the data center, is 1.3. A PUE closer to 1 means higher energy efficiency of the data center.

Additionally, the representative explained, "Each floor has a ceiling height of 7 to 8 meters, providing sufficient space to separate and circulate cold and hot air."

He said, "It will be a hyperscale data center capable of operating over 120,000 servers," and added, "We are implementing an ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management strategy that reduces annual electricity and water consumption by about 30%."
