Designation of Wintering Sites in National Parks
and Purchase of Farmed Aquatic Products
Yeosu City, South Jeolla Province (Mayor Jung Kimyung) announced on the 7th that it has submitted suggestions to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries regarding policies in the fish farming sector to prevent damage from low water temperatures.
According to the city, on the 6th, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries visited a fish farm affected by low water temperatures in Sinbok-ri, Dolsan-eup to inspect the damage and held an on-site meeting with officials from the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives and local fishers.

At the meeting, the city proposed several measures to prevent low-temperature damage, including designating wintering sites within national park areas, improving the government’s purchase system for farmed aquatic products, and implementing a reduction project for cage aquaculture operations. Previously, on the 5th, the city also submitted a response plan for abnormal water temperatures to South Jeolla Province.
A city official stated, "We will closely examine the difficulties faced by the fisheries sector to minimize damage caused by climate change and work to ensure these concerns are reflected in national policy."
Meanwhile, a low-temperature advisory has been in effect for the Gamakman area of Yeosu since the 10th of this month. As of the 6th, approximately 3,178,000 fish from 74 farms have been reported as presumed low-temperature casualties. The estimated damage amounts to 8.74 billion won.
