National Security Office Director Shin Won-sik emphasized the importance of the ROK-US alliance for peace, security, and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula and the region during his first face-to-face meeting with Michael Waltz, U.S. National Security Advisor, held on the 6th (local time) in Washington, D.C., and discussed ways to strengthen it.

According to the Blue House, both sides held in-depth consultations on the ROK-US alliance, North Korea issues, ROK-US-Japan cooperation, and regional and global matters at this meeting.

They also reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to the complete denuclearization of North Korea in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and agreed to cooperate in the formulation and implementation of policies toward North Korea. They will continue to closely monitor cooperation trends among North Korea, Russia, and China.

In particular, considering the comprehensive cooperation involved in the North Korea sector, they agreed to maintain close communication and coordination at the ROK-US National Security Council (NSC) level. Director Shin explained Korea's applied tariffs to the U.S. under the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and emphasized productive consultations between the trade authorities of both sides.

Meanwhile, on this visit to the U.S., Director Shin met with key members of the U.S. Congress, including Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker and Senate Foreign Relations Committee East Asia and Pacific Subcommittee Chairman Peter Ricketts, urging their continued support for the sustained development of the ROK-US alliance and ROK-US-Japan cooperation.
