Dong Daejeon Library to Open on May 1... Second Municipal Library in 35 Years

Daejeon City announced that the Dongdaejeon Library, its second municipal library, will open on May 1.

The Dongdaejeon Library was built on the site of the former Gayang Library, covering 5,358 square meters with a total floor area of 7,354 square meters. The building consists of one basement level and three above-ground floors. Construction was completed in October last year, and final interior preparations are currently underway.

This is the first municipal library to open in 35 years since the Hanbat Library in 1989. Located in Gayang-dong, which encompasses Dong-gu and Daedeok-gu, the new library is expected to bridge cultural gaps between regions and serve as a central space where all citizens can easily access books and culture.

The Dongdaejeon Library is designed as a specialized library for children and teenagers, offering differentiated spaces and programs compared to existing public libraries.

The first floor is dedicated to children, the second floor provides reading and creative spaces tailored for teenagers, and the third floor houses a general reference room open to all citizens.

Beyond simply being a reading space, the library will also serve as: ▲ a creative and experiential area for children and teenagers centered around books ▲ a communication and sharing space for citizens' reading and cultural activities ▲ and a park that connects the northern and southern communities of the neighborhood, which had been separated by slopes and walls.

The library features three reference rooms, four experiential rooms, and eight shared spaces, all designed to meet the diverse cultural needs of local residents and citizens.

It houses about 30,000 books and is preparing to offer a variety of periodicals, digital content, electronic resources, and VOD services. By establishing a library information system, the facility creates a smart library environment suitable for the digital age. Information and communication technology (ICT) and radio-frequency identification (RFID) systems have also been introduced to make book borrowing and returns more convenient.

In addition, the library plans to operate a variety of reading programs, author meet-and-greets, exhibitions, performances, and creative programs, aiming to become a library for everyone that enriches the daily lives of citizens.

Lee Jangwoo, Mayor of Daejeon, stated, "Modern libraries are spaces for knowledge, information, culture, and leisure, and are important cultural assets for the city. As we celebrate Family Month in May, we will open the long-awaited Dongdaejeon Library as an innovative library with a new concept, making it a great gift for our citizens."
