Yongin and Gwangju Cities Request Support from Ministry of Land for 'Gyeonggang Line Extension Project'

Proposal for Inclusion in the 5th National Railway Network Construction Plan

Yongin City and Gwangju City in Gyeonggi Province have requested support from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for the jointly promoted railway 'Gyeonggang Line Extension Project.'

On the 6th, Kim Eun-ju, Director of the Transportation Policy Bureau of Yongin City, Bang Se-hwan, Mayor of Gwangju City, and Lee Geon-young, Chairman of the Gyeonggang Line Extension Promotion Committee, visited the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and held a meeting with Yoon Jin-hwan, Director of the Railway Bureau of the Ministry, to make this request, the city announced on the 7th.

The 'Gyeonggang Line Extension Project' is a 37.97 km railway project branching from Gyeonggang Line Gyeonggi Gwangju Station and extending to Idong and Namsa-eup in Cheoin-gu, Yongin, where the 'Yongin Advanced System Semiconductor Cluster National Industrial Complex' is being established.

At the meeting, the attendees requested support to ensure that this project is reflected in the Ministry's '5th National Railway Network Construction Plan.' Along with this, the city also delivered a petition signed by 18,475 residents of Suji-gu, hoping for the inclusion of the 'Southern Gyeonggi Metropolitan Railway New Construction Project,' jointly promoted by four local governments including Yongin, Suwon, Seongnam, and Hwaseong, in the national railway network construction plan.

A city official emphasized, "The construction of railway infrastructure is an essential element for the successful establishment of the Idong Public Housing District for the settlement of the Advanced System Semiconductor Cluster industrial complex and specialized personnel," adding, "The Gyeonggang Line Extension Project is a necessary means of transportation for the citizens of the two local governments."

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is expected to announce new railway projects and additional review project routes for the 5th National Railway Network Construction Plan as early as within this year.
