Selected as 'Yedamgo' Project Sites by the Cultural Heritage Administration
Two New Locations to Systematically Store and Utilize Excavated Artifacts
Facilities in Siheung and Yeongwol Expected to Open by 2027
On the 7th, the Cultural Heritage Administration will sign a business agreement for the creation and operation of 'Yedamgo(庫)' with Siheung-si, Gyeonggi Province, and Yeongwol-gun, Gangwon Province at the National Palace Museum in Jongno-gu, Seoul.
Yedamgo is a historical and cultural space for excavated artifacts that implies "a space that contains the present in the old." Since 2021, the Cultural Heritage Administration has been establishing Yedamgo in idle facilities such as abandoned tunnels and dormitories to systematically store, manage, and utilize artifacts that have not been attributed to the state after excavation investigations. Previously established Yedamgo locations include the Photo Tunnel in Daejeon, Sinri Tunnel in Jeonju, and Cheonghaesa in Mokpo.
The Cultural Heritage Administration recently selected Siheung-si's 'Malgeunmul Sangsang Nuri' and Yeongwol-gun's 'Old Mungok Elementary School' as suitable sites for storing and utilizing excavated artifacts from the metropolitan and Gangwon regions, respectively. Ground surveys, basic planning, and detailed design will be conducted within the year, and the facilities are expected to open as early as 2027.
Choi Eung-cheon, head of the Cultural Heritage Administration, said, "We will do our best to establish Yedamgo as a cultural space where the public can vividly experience and learn about artifacts."
