First Meeting to Be Held in Tokyo on the 7th

Japan has established an 'Economic 2+2' ministerial meeting involving the foreign and economic heads of both countries with the United Kingdom. The UK is the second country after the United States with which Japan holds an Economic 2+2 ministerial meeting.

According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun on the 6th, the two governments will hold the first 'Economic 2+2' meeting in Tokyo on the 7th.

From Japan, Foreign Minister Takeo Iwaya and Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Yoji Muto will attend, while from the UK, Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Jonathan Reynolds will participate in the meeting.

The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that the two countries plan to discuss economic security, energy security, free and open international trade, cooperation with third countries including the Global South (a term mainly referring to emerging and developing countries located in the Southern Hemisphere), and other related topics at this meeting.

Earlier, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer met at the G20 summit held in Brazil last November and discussed the establishment of the 'Economic 2+2 meeting' between the two countries.
