"Urgent Need for Medical Students to Return to School"
The People Power Party stated on the 6th that it is reasonable to revert the medical school admission quota for next year to 3,058, the number before the increase.
Kwon Seong-dong, the floor leader of the People Power Party, held a briefing after concluding a party-government consultation with Lee Ju-ho, Deputy Prime Minister for Social Affairs and Minister of Education, saying, "The Deans' Council, which consists of 39 medical schools and medical graduate schools, submitted a proposal with this content to the Minister of Education."
The National Medical School Deans' Council proposed in the petition that after medical students return to school, the 2026 medical school admission quota be adjusted to 3,058, the same as in 2024. From 2027 onwards, they suggest setting the admission quota based on the decisions of the Medical Workforce Supply and Demand Estimation Committee.
Floor leader Kwon said, "We judge that the content proposed by the Deans' Council is practically reasonable," adding, "We hope the government and the medical community actively review this to correct the medical education system."
He further explained, "First of all, it is urgent for the students to return to school," and added, "Since the deans have proposed adjusting the admission quota and actively persuading students to participate in classes, it is reasonable to make decisions centered on the students and have the quota determined by the Estimation Committee from 2027."
