OpenAI Customized AI Agents
Capable of Supporting Doctoral-Level Research
Services Include Paper Writing and Data Analysis
Monthly Fees Expected to Reach Up to $20,000
"Willing to Pay If It Can Perform Tasks of $200,000 Salary Positions"
OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, is reportedly considering a subscription fee of up to $20,000 per month (approximately 28.9 million KRW) for a customized AI ‘agent’ service capable of doctoral-level research. This amount is 100 times higher than the current ChatGPT Pro monthly fee of $200. However, if the service can actually replace dozens of doctoral-level personnel, some opinions suggest that the fee offers good cost-effectiveness.
On the 5th (local time), IT specialized media The Information reported that OpenAI is developing AI agents for various professions and industries, and some of these are expected to be priced at a high level.
According to the media, OpenAI plans to provide customized services using AI agents for software development, support for high-income professional occupations, and doctoral-level research assistance. AI agents refer to ‘assistant-type AI’ that is more advanced than the current generative AI services provided by ChatGPT, capable of performing tasks at a human-like level. Agents targeting ‘high-income knowledge workers’ will be offered at $2,000 per month (approximately 2.88 million KRW), likely to be used in professions such as lawyers, consultants, and data analysts.
Additionally, agents for software engineers will include functions to assist with code writing, bug fixing, and automation tasks, and will be sold for $10,000 per month (approximately 14.4 million KRW). The most expensive agent, priced at $20,000 per month (approximately 28.9 million KRW), is expected to support doctoral-level research by providing features such as paper writing, data analysis, and experiment design. These customized AI agents will go beyond simple AI chatbots to assist with tasks in specific professions and maximize productivity.
The Information stated, “If AI can perform work at the level of a developer earning $200,000 annually or a critical medical researcher, people would be willing to pay more,” adding, “This potential consumer base is currently getting a ‘good deal’ with ChatGPT Pro, so it may not be profitable for OpenAI.” It also noted, “OpenAI expects to generate 20-25% of its total revenue from AI agents in the long term.”
OpenAI’s strategy is related to rapidly increasing operating costs. Although OpenAI’s revenue is surging, its expenses reportedly exceed its revenue. This is due to the high costs of developing new AI models and increased personnel expenses as the number of employees grows. OpenAI recorded a loss of about $5 billion (approximately 7.2 trillion KRW) last year, making additional funding necessary through this product launch.
