Development of 'Modern and Contemporary History Textbook' and Gonggang Project
Students Growing Together with the Local Community
High schools and universities in Gwangju have broken down their campus walls. Students move freely between university campuses, learning about local history and AI, and use their free periods to pursue their own dreams. Educational innovation led by autonomous public high schools in partnership with local universities is driving student growth.

According to the Gwangju Office of Education on the 6th, autonomous public high schools (Jagonggo) are collaborating with local universities and institutions to develop curricula tailored to each school's characteristics. Currently, Gwangju High School, Gwangju Jeil High School, Suwan High School, and Sangil Girls' High School are participating. Each participating school receives a budget of 1 billion KRW and administrative and financial support over five years.
Gwangju Jeil High School has partnered with Chosun University to directly develop a ‘Modern and Contemporary History of Gwangju’ textbook, which is scheduled for publication in the first half of this year. Suwan High School provides customized education for students through the ‘Gonggang Project,’ which utilizes students’ free periods, as well as joint educational programs with local universities.

In addition, Gwangju High School has strengthened AI practical education in collaboration with Chonnam National University, while Sangil Girls' High School has expanded student club activities and class connections by utilizing research facilities and personnel from local universities.
The city’s Office of Education plans to actively support curriculum innovation at each school in partnership with universities this year as well. Superintendent Lee Jungseon said, “We will provide students with practical educational opportunities and nurture local talent through cooperation with local universities.”
