Kim Daejung, Jeonnam Superintendent of Education: "Turning the Crisis of Regional Disappearance into a New Opportunity"

Participation in the Population Issue Awareness Improvement Relay Campaign

Kim Daejung, Superintendent of Education for Jeollanam-do, participated in the "Population Issue Awareness Improvement Relay Campaign" on the 6th to raise social awareness about the problems of population decline caused by low birth rates and aging.


This campaign is jointly promoted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Human Resource Development Institute for Health and Welfare, and was planned to increase public interest in the issues of population decline and aging.

Superintendent Kim Daejung certified his participation in the campaign by holding a placard with the declaration, "Children are happy, youth nurture hope, and the elderly lead fulfilling lives?Jeollanam-do Office of Education stands together to make Korea a better place."


According to the future population projections (2022?2052) by Statistics Korea, the school-age population in Jeollanam-do (elementary, middle, and high school students) is expected to decrease by more than 50%, from 182,338 in 2022 to 97,558 in 2035.


In response, the provincial office of education is making multifaceted efforts to proactively address the decline in the school-age population and changes in future society, such as providing the nation's first Jeonnam Student Education Allowance, promoting educational development special district projects in 17 cities and counties, and establishing (tentatively named) Jeonnam International Vocational High School.


Superintendent Kim Daejung emphasized, "The issues of low birth rates and aging are not just about population decline, but are serious matters that threaten the sustainability of regions and the nation. Education is the key to solving this, and 'glocal education' will be a core solution."


He added, "Under the grand goal of 'Glocal Jeonnam Education for the Coexistence of the Region and the World,' the provincial office of education will take the lead in turning the crisis of regional extinction into a new opportunity."


Meanwhile, Superintendent Kim nominated Kim Taegyun, Chairperson of Jeonnam Provincial Council, and Lim Jongsik, Superintendent of Education for Gyeongbuk Province, as the next participants in the relay campaign.
