Yongin City Releases Social Survey Report:
90% Satisfied with Living Environment
Childcare and Education Expense Support Cited as Most Needed Birth Policy
The top policy concern among residents of Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province, was found to be "transportation." Ninety percent of citizens reported satisfaction with their overall living environment.
Yongin City released the "2024 Yongin City Social Survey" report on the 6th. This survey was conducted from August 29 to September 12 of last year, targeting household members aged 15 and older from 1,590 households in the region to understand citizens' social interests and subjective awareness. The survey covered a total of 49 items across six areas: family and household, environment, health, social integration and community, safety, and city-specific characteristics.
The percentage of respondents satisfied with the overall living environment in Yongin increased by 1.5 percentage points from 87.8% in 2023 to 89.3% last year. The areas with the highest satisfaction rates were family and social relationships (96.1%), housing (94.3%), and safety (93.3%), respectively.
The quality of life, rated on a 10-point scale, generally improved compared to two years ago. Life satisfaction rose from 6.3 to 6.5 during this period, and regional satisfaction scores increased from 6.3 to 6.4. Among these, regions with satisfaction scores of 8 or higher included Giheung-gu (37.4%), by gender males (36.1%), and by generation those in their 30s (41.0%).
The policy area of greatest interest to citizens was transportation. Forty-one percent of respondents identified "improving commuting traffic conditions and establishing a metropolitan transportation network" as necessary policy tasks for the city. This was followed by fostering future growth industries and creating a business-friendly city (14.8%), and expanding cultural, artistic, and tourism infrastructure (9.1%).
The percentage of respondents planning to have children within five years also rebounded. It decreased from 6.7% in 2019 to 6.4% in 2022 but rose again to 6.8% last year. Among them, the most needed childbirth support policy was "support for childcare and education expenses" (30.7%). High proportions also cited "improvements in systems such as expanding parental leave" (18.0%) and "support for childbirth incentives" (17.9%).
However, the positive perception of the local environment, including air quality, water quality, and green spaces, increased by 5 to 11 percentage points compared to 2018 but slightly declined compared to the 2022 survey, indicating a need for policy improvement.
Meanwhile, when asked about the image that first comes to mind regarding "Yongin Special City," 32.8% of respondents chose "a special city with a population of 1.1 million," followed by "a livable residential city" (17.5%) and "an economically developed semiconductor-leading city" (15.8%).
