Greenland Prime Minister M?te Egede stated on the 5th (local time) that he does not want to become American or Danish, addressing U.S. President Donald Trump's attempt to annex Greenland.
On the same day, Prime Minister Egede posted on Facebook, protesting, "Americans and their leaders need to understand this." He emphasized, "We are not for sale and cannot be forcibly taken," and "Our future will be decided by us within Greenland."
The day before, President Trump said in a speech to the U.S. Congress, "I strongly support your right to decide your own future," regarding Greenland, and added, "If you want, we will welcome you to the United States." He also said, "I think we will secure it. In some way, we will have it."
Greenland, rich in mineral, oil, and natural gas resources, was under Danish rule for about 300 years before being incorporated as part of Denmark proper in 1953, moving away from colonial governance. Although it has been granted autonomy, Denmark still holds authority over foreign affairs and defense policy decisions.
Denmark strongly opposed President Trump's speech. On the same day, Danish Defense Minister Truls Lund Poulsen gave an interview to the local public broadcaster DR, drawing a line by saying, "That will not happen." He also stated, "The direction Greenland wants to take will be decided by the people of Greenland."
