Changwon Special City Expands Installation of Safety Lights at Crosswalks for Pedestrians Crosswalk Safety Light.

Crosswalk safety lights are recessed LED lighting facilities installed at regular intervals along the edges of crosswalks, similar to airplane runways, to help drivers easily recognize crosswalks at night, effectively ensuring pedestrian safety.

Changwon City is investing a budget of 180 million KRW to complete the installation of safety lights at a total of 88 crosswalks: 34 locations in 2023 and 54 locations in 2024, and is currently promoting additional installations at 26 locations this year.

In addition, the city has been significantly reducing the number of traffic accident fatalities by implementing customized traffic safety facility improvements at each site, such as improving facilities in zones protecting vulnerable road users, installing colored guide lines on the road surface, and applying high-intensity lane markings. The fatalities have decreased from 61 in 2022 to 48 in 2023, and are expected to drop to 36 in 2024.

Lee Jong-geun, Director of the Transportation and Construction Bureau, stated, “We will continue to strive to implement effective policies to create a safe traffic environment where both pedestrians and drivers prioritize citizen safety.”

Meanwhile, the city is actively conducting campaigns using various media such as themed card news, electronic billboards, and SNS posts for online promotion, as well as on-site promotion during meetings with community leaders and various organizations, bus information systems, and traffic broadcasts to raise awareness of the importance of traffic safety culture.
