"‘Xiao AI’, open the window"
Sitting in the back seat of the electric car SU7 made by Chinese IT company Xiaomi, just saying this phrase made the window slide open. This AI feature, called Xiao AI, is the core of Xiaomi’s AI ecosystem that has expanded its reach from smartphones to automobiles.
At the ‘Mobile World Congress 2025 (MWC 2025)’ held on the 4th (local time) at Fira Gran Via exhibition center in Barcelona, Spain, Xiaomi had the most popular booth. Especially, the latest electric car model Ultra SU7, unveiled for the first time at this exhibition, and the existing SU7 attracted as many as 1,200 people lining up over two days for test drives. The booth showcased a full range of products from smartphones, wearables, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices to automobiles.

Holding a Xiaomi smartphone, I personally tried the electric car, which connected to the vehicle’s Hyper operating system, allowing control of various functions. When the car recognized it had arrived home, the window curtains automatically opened and the Xiaomi robot vacuum cleaner started operating. It was a moment that demonstrated a perfectly integrated ecosystem linking the car, phone, and smart home. Martin from Germany, after experiencing the Xiaomi electric car, said, "I didn’t know Chinese companies had such advanced technology. AI is now basic, and the key is how to apply it in real life, and it seems Chinese companies are one step ahead."
This year’s MWC exhibition was dominated by new technologies from Chinese companies like Xiaomi. Chinese companies captivated visitors not only with AI but also with innovative hardware and practical features.

"Beep beep. There is a 94% probability this is a deepfake video."
This warning message appeared on the screen of the ‘Magic7’ Pro smartphone displayed at the booth of Chinese smartphone company ‘Honor’. When pressing the button on the screen, a ‘detecting’ indicator spun for a few seconds before instantly verifying authenticity. Chris, a visitor from the UK, said, "In a reality where video phishing is increasing, this could be very useful as a security measure."

The innovation competition among Chinese companies was fierce in the display sector as well. On the tables at Huawei’s booth, which occupied most of the first-floor hall of the exhibition center, the three-fold foldable phone was a ‘popular item’. With an innovative design that folds twice, it transforms into a 10-inch tablet when unfolded and a regular smartphone when folded. Visitors repeatedly folded and unfolded the device.
On the 4th (local time), Lenovo's rollable laptop was showcased at the MWC2025 exhibition hall. Pressing the button at the top right of the keypad causes the screen to roll up or down. Lenovo plans to release this laptop to the market within the year. Photo by Yujin Park
At the Lenovo booth, a small button on a black laptop caught attention. When a staff member pressed the button, the laptop screen slowly rolled upward as if it were alive. Amid gasps from surrounding visitors, YouTubers and journalists all aimed their cameras at the rollable laptop. Lenovo also showcased a laptop capable of displaying 3D images without special glasses. A game screen was being demonstrated, where the car on the screen moved vividly as if it would jump out in real life. The feature of this 3D laptop was that it could be controlled by an ‘AI ring’. Wearing a black ring on a finger and rotating it changed the menu on the screen, and clicking was possible with just finger movements.
At the TCL booth, a smartphone with a paper-like texture that reduces eye strain was exhibited. This paper-textured phone provided various AI document creation functions such as ‘email’, ‘work summary’, and ‘event planning’ when pressing a pen-shaped button. When a reporter selected ‘invitation’ and entered ‘my birthday party’, a completed invitation appeared on the screen within seconds.
