Gwangju Students Bring Samulnori Drumbeats to Germany

Promoting the Spirit of May 18 Gwangju
Through Traditional Korean Culture

The 'Democracy, Human Rights, and Peaceful Unification International Exchange Group' from the Gwangju Office of Education is promoting Korea's traditional culture and the spirit of May 18 Gwangju in Germany. On the 3rd, at a festival in Dusseldorf, Germany, students performed Samulnori and Buchaechum, and also organized traditional game experiences, receiving an enthusiastic response from locals.


According to the city Office of Education on the 5th, Superintendent Lee Jungseon and 16 second-year high school students comprising the 'Democracy, Human Rights, and Peaceful Unification International Exchange Group' have been participating in exchange activities in Germany from the 1st to the 8th.

On the 3rd, the group introduced Korean traditional culture by performing Samulnori and Buchaechum at Dusseldorf's 'Rosenmontag,' one of Germany's representative festivals. After the festival, the students engaged with local Taekwondo students in traditional Korean games such as Gongginori, Ddakjichigi, and Jegichagi, which were well received.


Until the 8th, the group plans to visit the Memorial Hall for Korean Miners and Nurses in Germany, hold a flash mob at the Berlin Wall, attend a lecture on German unification, and participate in a book discussion on 'The Boy Is Coming' with students from Kepler High School in Leipzig, to promote the spirit of May 18 Gwangju and Korean culture.


Kim Hyeju, a second-year student at Jeonnam Girls' Commercial High School, said, "I felt proud seeing the locals enjoy our traditional culture." Superintendent Lee said, "I hope the students will develop a global perspective."
