Acting Commissioner of the National Police Agency
Personnel Action Expected
The police have registered Park Hyun-soo, acting commissioner of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, as a suspect and notified the commencement of an investigation in connection with the 'December 3 Emergency Martial Law Incident.'
According to the Special Investigation Unit of the National Police Agency on the 4th, Acting Commissioner Park was notified last week of the start of the investigation. This follows a citizen group filing charges against Acting Commissioner Park for treason.
At a regular press briefing that day, Acting Commissioner Lee Ho-young stated, “If a notification of investigation against Acting Commissioner Park is received, personnel measures will naturally be taken.”
Regarding whether he had been contacted by a presidential office official before the personnel decision, Acting Commissioner Lee responded, “There was absolutely no such contact during this personnel process.”
Earlier, Acting Commissioner Park was questioned as a witness by the police on the 15th of last month. Since the Yoon Suk-yeol administration began, Park has held key positions including the Personnel Verification Team of the Presidential Transition Committee, dispatched to the Presidential Office’s National Situation Room, Director of the Police Intelligence Bureau at the National Police Agency, and Director of the Police Bureau at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. It was revealed that Park made several phone calls with former Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min, Police Commissioner Cho Ji-ho, and Police Security Bureau Director Im Jeong-ju shortly after the martial law declaration.
At the National Assembly’s Public Administration and Security Committee plenary session on the 18th of last month, Acting Commissioner Lee stated, “If (Acting Commissioner Park) is converted to a suspect, personnel measures will be taken.”
