Brain-Computer Interface Technology Standards... Led by Korea

Discussions on developing technology standards for the 'Brain-Computer Interface (BCI)', which connects the human brain and computers, will be led by South Korea.

The National Institute of Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that it will hold the 'BCI International Standardization Committee (ISO/IEC JTC1 SC43)' general meeting for four days from the 3rd to the 6th at Gachon University Convention Center.

BCI is a convergent technology that collects and interprets neural transmission signals generated by human brain activity and connects them to digital devices. It can improve the quality of life for people with mobility difficulties by enabling actions such as turning on lights or operating assistive robots through thought alone.

The BCI International Standardization Committee was established in 2022 and is promoting the standardization of terminology, data formats, and use cases for technology commercialization and ecosystem construction. South Korea has achieved results by proposing standards for BCI data formats and taking on the chairmanship of the standard development working group.

During this general meeting, South Korea will propose two new international standards. The first is the 'Design Considerations for BCI Developers' standard, which provides user-centered design guidelines such as user age groups and biometric information protection to help users use BCI products or services more conveniently.

The second is the 'Interfacing Guidelines for Multipurpose BCI System Design' standard. It supports safe use by automatically detecting user movements to switch between operation and rest modes and preventing unnecessary malfunctions. Once these two standards are developed and applied in the future, compatibility between the brain and devices will increase, enabling stable use in various environments.

Oh Gwanghae, Director of the Standards Policy Bureau, said, "We will actively support expanding South Korea's international standard leadership in the BCI International Standardization Committee."
