The Korea Communications Commission Discusses Expanding Broadcasting and Telecommunications Cooperation with Spain at MWC Venue

The Korea Communications Commission announced on the 3rd that it will expand broadcasting and telecommunications cooperation between Korea and Spain, starting with participation in the Mobile World Congress (MWC), a mobile telecommunications industry exhibition held in Barcelona, Spain.


Hosted by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), this MWC features participation from over 2,700 companies worldwide, with events including business collaboration, investment attraction, and new technology presentations.

According to the Korea Communications Commission, Kim Tae-gyu, Vice Chairman of the Commission, attended the MWC and visited booths of major domestic and international companies such as Samsung Electronics, SK Telecom, LG Uplus, and Ericsson. At this event, Vice Chairman Kim explored key company exhibition halls to understand the latest mobile technology trends including artificial intelligence (AI) and encouraged the stakeholders.


On the 4th, Vice Chairman Kim will meet Mats Granryd, Secretary-General of GSMA, and Vivek Badrinath, the next Secretary-General of GSMA, to discuss telecommunications technologies related to the AI transformation. He also plans to visit major exhibition booths including KT and the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA).


From the 5th to the 6th, he will move to Madrid, Spain, to meet with Vicente, Chairman of the Spanish National Market and Competition Commission, and executives of the Spanish public broadcaster RTVE. With Chairman Vicente, they will discuss the progress of policies related to the European Union (EU)’s 'Digital Services Act' and 'Digital Markets Act,' and introduce the Korea Communications Commission’s ongoing efforts such as the 'Online Service User Protection Act (tentative name)'.


He will then visit RTVE headquarters to exchange opinions with key executives on growth strategies for terrestrial broadcasting in response to changes in the media landscape such as online video services (OTT). They will also discuss cooperation plans in the broadcasting sector between Korea and Spain.


Vice Chairman Kim said, "By participating in the world’s largest mobile telecommunications industry exhibition, I aim to grasp the latest technology trends and discuss ways to strengthen policy cooperation with governments of major countries including Spain."
