Cheonsuman Fishery Area in Seosan and Hongseong
to Undergo Major Overhaul Covering 1,300 Hectares
Cheonsuman, located in Seosan City and Hongseong County of Chungnam Province and renowned for its breathtaking natural scenery, will undergo a major overhaul through the 'Clean Fishery Regeneration Project.'
According to Chungnam Province on the 3rd, Cheonsuman (Seosan City and Hongseong County) has been finally selected for the 'Clean Fishery Regeneration Project' contest conducted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
The Clean Fishery Regeneration Project aims to establish a sustainable foundation for seafood production by restoring the environment of bay areas whose productivity has declined due to pollution and sedimentation caused by long-term aquaculture.
Following this selection, the province will invest 5 billion won (2.5 billion won from the national government and 2.5 billion won from local funds) by next year to actively promote environmental improvement projects for aquaculture farms, such as clams and oysters, in the Cheonsuman area of Seosan City (900ha) and Hongseong County (400ha).
The main initiatives include a detailed survey and design for the contaminated sediment target areas, removal of polluted sediments and waste, environmental improvements such as sand spreading and leveling, support for seed purchase costs when stocking seeds in purified farms, establishment of a marine environment monitoring system, and strengthening local capabilities.
The province expects that, once the project is completed, it will increase productivity and revitalize fishing villages in the Cheonsuman area, where productivity has significantly declined due to slow growth of aquaculture species and mass clam deaths during periods of high temperature.
Jeon Sangwook, Director of the Provincial Oceans and Fisheries Bureau, stated, "We will focus our administrative efforts to ensure the smooth implementation of the Clean Fishery Regeneration Project in the Seosan and Hongseong Cheonsuman area," and added, "We will do our utmost to increase fishermen's income by establishing a sustainable fishery environment."
