"Rapid Recovery of Bilateral Relations Possible"
The Kremlin evaluated the change in foreign policy of the Donald Trump administration as aligning with Russia's vision.
According to AFP on the 2nd (local time), Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, said in an interview with a domestic broadcaster that day, "The new U.S. administration is rapidly shifting its foreign policy," and "this largely aligns with our vision."
Spokesperson Peskov assessed that "there has been significant damage in Russia-U.S. relations and there is still a long way to go," but also predicted, "If the political will of President Putin and President Trump is maintained, this process could proceed faster and more successfully than expected."
AFP reported that the interview was conducted on the 26th of last month but was reported four days later. Between the interview and the report, on the 28th of last month, an unexpected event occurred when the meeting between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ended in failure. At that time, President Zelensky repeatedly requested security guarantees for Ukraine, but President Trump responded with remarks such as "rude" and "ungrateful," and the meeting ended earlier than scheduled.
Regarding this, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs evaluated, "Zelensky's visit to Washington is a complete political and diplomatic failure of the Kyiv regime."
On the 12th of last month, President Trump and President Putin had a phone call and agreed to immediately start discussions on ending the war in Ukraine led by both countries, as well as to accelerate the restoration of bilateral relations.
