Presenting the Slogan "Surpassing 30 Years, Gijang Leaps Forward Again"
Various Events to Celebrate Remarkable Growth and Boost Residents' Pride
Busan's Gijang-gun will celebrate the "30th Anniversary of Gijang-gun Restoration" on March 1st.
Gijang-gun has been called "Gijang" since the Unified Silla period, but in 1914 during the Japanese colonial era, it was incorporated into Dongnae-gun and after liberation, it was merged into Yangsan-gun in 1973.
Afterwards, through the Yangsan-gun Eastern Branch Office, it was incorporated into Busan City on March 1, 1995, due to administrative district reorganization, finally regaining the name "Gijang" after 81 years.
To commemorate the 30th anniversary of its restoration this year, Gijang-gun is promoting the slogan "Surpassing 30 Years, Gijang Leaps Forward Again," and will hold various events throughout the year to celebrate Gijang's remarkable growth achieved together with its residents and to boost local pride.
▲ Production of a 30-year restoration documentary ▲ Publication of a restoration commemorative booklet ▲ Restoration commemorative photo exhibition ▲ Lighting street events connecting Gijang Station and Gijang Eupseong, highlighting Gijang's history will continue. In particular, ▲ Daebyeon Anchovy Festival ▲ Cheolma Hanwoo Bulgogi Festival ▲ Jeonggwan Ecological Stream Learning and Culture Festival ▲ Chaseong Cultural Festival and other major festivals will be linked with diverse restoration commemorative events, making this year a "Year of Restoration Commemoration" shared with all residents.
County Governor Jeong Jong-bok said, "Since the restoration in 1995, Gijang-gun has experienced not only quantitative growth in population, housing, and roads but also qualitative growth in all areas such as education, culture, and welfare over the past 30 years. On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of restoration, we will reflect on the history of Gijang-gun achieved together with the residents and lead the county government more vigorously for the residents' happy lives and sustainable development of Gijang-gun."
Gijang-gun is the only autonomous county among Busan's 16 districts and counties and has achieved remarkable growth since its restoration. Over the past 30 years, ▲ population increased 2.4 times from 72,000 to 175,000 ▲ budget size expanded 27.7 times from 32 billion KRW to 887.5 billion KRW ▲ housing supply rate rose 24.4% from 77.7% to 102%.
Also, ▲ 1998 opening of Gijang Comprehensive Social Welfare Center ▲ 2000 opening of the new Gijang-gun Office building ▲ 2008 completion of Jeonggwan New Town ▲ 2009 commencement of Ilgwang Recreation Area development ▲ 2010 commencement of Dongbusan Tourism Complex (Osiria Tourism Complex) construction / opening of Southeast Nuclear Medicine Institute / commencement of Gijang Ceramics Village tourism site ▲ 2014 commencement of Southeast Radiation Medical Science Industrial Complex ▲ 2015 elevation of Jeonggwan-eup ▲ 2019 completion of Ilgwang New Town ▲ 2023 selection as a specialized complex for power semiconductor materials and parts ▲ 2024 commencement of Busan Gijang Filming Studio / opening of Andersen Village and Fairy Tale Village ▲ 2025 opening of Cheolma Urban Agriculture Park and other projects driving Gijang-gun's development in administration, culture, tourism, and industry are actively underway, positioning Gijang-gun from the outskirts of Busan to a central city in the Southeast region.
