Cheongsong-gun Announces 2025 Environmental Policy Directions
Laying the Foundation for Carbon Neutrality and Expanding Reliable Water Management
Promoting Air Quality Improvement and “Oxygen Cafe” Initiatives
Advancing Ecological Restoration and Expanding Environmental Services
Enhancing Waste Management and Circular Economy Efforts
Securing Clean Water Supply and Improving Sewage Systems for Residents
Cheongsong-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, has set the 2025 environmental sector administrative goal as “Creating a safe environment and reliable water management for a robust living environment” and announced the corresponding implementation plan.
First, the “Cheongsong-gun Carbon Neutral Green Growth Basic Plan” will be established to lay the foundation for achieving carbon neutrality, and greenhouse gas reduction projects by sector will be closely coordinated and promoted by the relevant departments.
To improve air quality by reducing fine dust, subsidy projects such as the distribution of electric vehicles and the establishment of charging infrastructure, early scrapping support for old diesel vehicles, installation of emission reduction devices, and replacement of construction machinery engines will also be promoted to continue the reputation of Cheongsong as an “Oxygen Cafe.”
Additionally, the “Jilgogae Ecological Axis Restoration Project” (total project cost 5.8 billion KRW), which connects the Korean Peninsula ecological axis severed by local roads, will commence construction, with phased work planned aiming for full completion in 2026.
Furthermore, 700 million KRW will be invested in the disposal of old slate to safely handle slate used in buildings and abandoned slate, expanding environmental services so that residents can experience environmental safety in their daily lives.
Next, to ensure stable disposal of household waste, a budget of 2.2 billion KRW will be invested to timely outsource processing to public and private facilities, minimizing waste accumulation and taking the lead in preventing environmental pollution.
Moreover, about 500 million KRW will be invested to promote the collection of agricultural waste generated on farms and recyclables discharged from households, and to improve disposal locations by installing joint collection centers and neighborhood recycling yards. The recycling exchange program for recyclables (paper packs, used batteries, transparent PET bottles) will also be actively promoted to contribute to realizing a circular economy and achieving carbon neutrality goals through waste resource recycling and reducing plastic use.
To realize water welfare through the supply of clean tap water and improve residential conditions, the local water supply expansion project will also be actively promoted. The Andeok (Hyeonseo) and Bunam water supply facility expansion project (project cost 25.3 billion KRW) will commence in 2023 and supply local water to 670 households and 1,208 people in the area by December 2026. The Jinbo water supply facility expansion project (project cost 42 billion KRW) is also underway to ensure smooth water supply in the region.
Once these projects are completed, the local water supply coverage rate is expected to increase from 77.3% to 86.4%, greatly contributing to stable water supply.
Finally, by expanding sewage treatment facilities and maintaining sewage pipelines, water quality in public water bodies will be improved and a pleasant local environment will be created.
The rural village sewage installation project will be promoted in untreated sewage areas within Cheongsong-gun to reduce water pollution and improve residents’ quality of life.
Additionally, to resolve the issue of domestic wastewater being improperly treated and discharged into streams, sewage pipeline maintenance projects will be carried out in Cheongun, Gucheon, Sangui, and the Gameun and Seongjae areas of Andeok-myeon to protect the water quality of the uppermost Nakdong River region and improve residents’ living environment.
Governor Yoon Kyung-hee stated, “We will do our best to create a natural ecosystem resilient to the climate crisis and realize responsible carbon neutrality to protect environmental safety in the daily lives of residents and achieve a first-class Cheongsong where people want to live.”
