Allegations of Workplace Harassment Raised
No Evidence of Criminal Activity Found
A foreign worker in his 20s found dead in Yeongam, Jeollanam-do, is alleged to have been subjected to workplace harassment, and the police are currently investigating the facts.
According to the Yeongam Police Station on the 27th, a Nepalese migrant worker A (27) was found dead at around 2 a.m. on the 22nd in a dormitory at a livestock farm in Yeongam-gun.
There were no external injuries on A’s body, and the police believe there is no suspicion of a crime. A entered the country with an employment permit visa and had been working at the farm for about six months. There are 18 migrant workers employed at the farm, including A (16 Nepalese, 1 Chinese, and 1 Vietnamese).
Migrant worker organizations such as the Jeonnam Migrant Workers Human Rights Network claim that A died due to workplace harassment. It is also reported that A was overloaded with work and was not guaranteed proper break times.
A was subjected to prolonged verbal abuse and physical assault by the farm owner and team leader, causing him to suffer mental distress. The police are investigating whether workplace power harassment actually occurred and the circumstances surrounding it.
The migrant worker organizations plan to hold a press conference at 1 p.m. on the 28th in front of the Mokpo branch of the Gwangju Regional Employment and Labor Office, urging thorough investigations by labor authorities and the establishment of measures to prevent recurrence.
