Gwangju City participated in the "Child Abuse Prevention Relay Campaign" to raise awareness about the importance of preventing child abuse and protecting children's rights.
This campaign is being conducted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the National Center for the Rights of the Child to increase awareness of child abuse and promote a positive parenting culture. It began in May last year, starting with Lee Kiil, the First Vice Minister of Health and Welfare.
With the recommendation of Lee Jungseon, Superintendent of Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education, Ahn Jin, Chairperson of the Gwangju Autonomous Police Committee, participated in the campaign and posted a related message on his personal social networking service (SNS). Chairperson Ahn nominated Ahn Pyeonghwan, Chairperson of the Gwangju Administrative Autonomy Committee, as the next participant in the campaign.
The city is playing a role in identifying and supporting children in welfare blind spots who need protection by conducting joint inspections of high-risk children, human rights protection investigations at child care facilities, and competency enhancement training for staff responding to child abuse.
Gwangju City will implement a pilot project after Buk-gu and Gwangsan-gu were selected for the Ministry of Health and Welfare's "2025 Child Abuse Prevention and Early Support Pilot Project." The city plans to provide proactive support to households at risk of child abuse, offering 500,000 KRW per household to a total of 30 households.
Ahn Jin, Chairperson of the Gwangju Autonomous Police Committee, said, "I will take the lead in creating a safe Gwangju where children are respected as they are and can grow up happily," and added, "We will do our best to strengthen the cooperation system with related organizations to respond to child abuse and to provide prompt support for victims and prevent abuse."
