Gyeonggi Special Judicial Police Crack Down on Illegal Activities of 폐섬유 and 폐의류 Companies

Gyeonggi Province will conduct crackdowns on illegal activities targeting waste fiber and waste clothing handling companies from March 5 to 18.

This crackdown is a measure to prevent environmental pollution, as illegal activities such as unreported companies in the Gyeonggi area separating and sorting waste fibers and waste clothing illegally discharged from sewing factories and supplying them to recycling companies or incinerating them have become rampant.

The main targets of the crackdown are ▲ unauthorized waste disposal business operations ▲ violations of waste disposal standards ▲ improper handling of workplace waste ▲ unreported waste disposal activities.

Under the current 'Waste Management Act,' unauthorized waste disposal business operations are punishable by imprisonment of up to 5 years or a fine of up to 50 million won. Additionally, entrusting workplace waste to unauthorized or unreported disposal operators is punishable by imprisonment of up to 3 years or a fine of up to 30 million won, and violations of waste disposal standards, failure to enter disposal details into electronic information processing programs, or unreported waste disposal activities are punishable by imprisonment of up to 2 years or a fine of up to 20 million won.

Ki Do, Chief of the Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police Unit, stated, "With the rapid changes in fashion trends shortening the lifespan of clothing, the amount of waste fiber and waste clothing is increasing, but concerns about environmental pollution due to illegal disposal have led to this investigation." He added, "We will do our best to preemptively block illegal activities throughout the entire process from the generation, collection, transportation, to the disposal of waste fiber and waste clothing, and to preserve the environment sustainably in line with the carbon-neutral Gyeonggi RE100 policy direction."
