Turning Hyeonchungwon into a Cultural Healing Shelter... Dongjak-gu Signs MOU with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs

Starting the Transformation from a Memorial Space to an Everyday Sanctuary

Dongjak-gu, Seoul (Mayor Park Ilha) has joined forces with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs to recreate the National Seoul Memorial Cemetery, a symbol of national defense and veterans' honor, as a world-class memorial space and a cultural healing sanctuary.

Turning Hyeonchungwon into a Cultural Healing Shelter... Dongjak-gu Signs MOU with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs District Mayor Park Il-ha and Minister Kang Jeong-ae of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs signed a memorandum of understanding on the 26th for the successful promotion of the "National Seoul National Cemetery Re-creation Project" and are taking a commemorative photo. The district announced on the 27th that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs at the Memorial Cemetery the day before to successfully promote the 'Memorial Cemetery Recreation Project.' The signing ceremony was attended by Mayor Park Ilha and Minister Kang Jeong-ae of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, among others.

The 'Memorial Cemetery Recreation Project' began last year when the Memorial Cemetery was transferred from the Ministry of National Defense to the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs. This served as an opportunity to create a 'popular everyday memorial and relaxation spot for all citizens.' Considering that Dongjak-gu has been exploring ways to expand the park functions of the Memorial Cemetery, which covers a total area of about 430,000 pyeong with 70-80% green space, the district has been seeking ways to enhance its park features.

Based on this MOU, the district plans to actively cooperate with administrative support such as permits and approvals to expedite the project and work to spread a culture of 'patriotism for all' that expresses gratitude in daily life. The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs plans to actively gather opinions from the district and residents and promote the project in a way that contributes to revitalizing the local economy.

Mayor Park Ilha said, “We have closely cooperated with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs to recreate the Memorial Cemetery as a first-class veterans' sacred site and cultural relaxation space. We will do our utmost to establish the Memorial Cemetery as a 'resting place for the patriotic spirits and all Korean people' so that anyone can foster a sense of patriotism and national spirit in their daily lives.”
