On the 26th, Dangjin City in Chungnam Province announced that Janggo Port has been finally selected for the "2025 Fishing Village New Vitality Promotion Project" hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
Accordingly, a total project budget of 40 billion KRW has been secured, including 15 billion KRW from the national government, 4.5 billion KRW from the province, 10.5 billion KRW from the city, and 10 billion KRW from private investment. Over the next five years starting in 2025, a Fisheries Center, Marine Art Gallery, Fishermen's Community Center, and Parking Tower will be built at Janggo Port National Fishing Port.
According to the city, Dangjin Janggo Port is facing an urgent need to attract young people and diversify income sources due to an aging population and a decline in fishing households.
To address this, a local council was formed with the Janggo Port Fishing Village Association, Dangjin Daeil Shipping & Tourism Co., Ltd., Janggo Port 2-ri Village Association, Seokmun-myeon Development Committee, and relevant experts. Around 20 project briefings and consultations were held in preparation for the public contest.
The city plans to establish a Fisheries Center consisting of seafood and specialty product stores and restaurants, a Marine Art Gallery to foster local artists and serve as a stay-type tourism facility, a Fishermen's Community Center for youth startups and fishermen's community activities, and a Parking Tower for tourist convenience. In addition, a Fisheries Heritage Park will be renovated and scenic lighting will be installed on the breakwater.
The private investor, Dangjin Daeil Shipping & Tourism Co., Ltd., will invest more than 10 billion KRW to operate a cruise ship and build a Win-Win Economic Center, creating spaces where local residents and tourists can come together.
A Dangjin City official stated, "With the influx of tourists and increased seafood sales, Janggo Port will be developed as a key hub for seafood consumption in Dangjin," adding, "We will do our best to attract young people and revitalize the fishing village economy by supporting youth startups and local artists' creative activities."
