Launching Ceremony for Facility Ordered from Malaysian Company
Set to Depart in February 2027... Collaboration with Japanese Firm
Samsung Heavy Industries held the launching ceremony for the floating LNG production facility (FLNG·Floating Liquefied Natural Gas) ordered from Malaysia's Petronas. The launching ceremony refers to the event where a newly built ship is floated on water for the first time at the shipyard.
On the 26th, Samsung Heavy Industries launched the 'PFLNG TIGA' ordered from the Malaysian state-owned energy company Petronas at the Geoje Shipyard in Geoje-si, Gyeongnam. About 150 officials attended the launching ceremony, including representatives from the ordering company Petronas and the Japanese construction company JGC Holdings.
PFLNG TIGA is the name of the facility ordered from Petronas in December 2022. The hull length is 281m, width 64m, and depth 32m, making it a super-large facility. This size corresponds to 2.5 times the area of a soccer field (105m×68m), and the launching weight alone reaches about 50,000 tons. This facility is expected to produce 2.1 million tons of gas annually starting from May 2027 off the coast of the 'Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park' located in Sabah, Malaysia.
After the launching, Samsung Heavy Industries will berth PFLNG TIGA at the quay and proceed with ▲fabrication and installation of the hull interior and LNG storage tanks, ▲installation of the upper plant facilities, and ▲insulation work. Among these, the core process is installing plant facilities weighing about 40,000 tons on the upper structure. Samsung Heavy Industries plans to collaborate with Japan's JGC Holdings to fabricate 11 modules ranging from 2,000 to 7,000 tons, install them using a 9,000-ton offshore crane, and set sail in February 2027.
Datuk Adif Zulkifli, Head of Petronas Gas and Marine Business Division, said, "This FLNG not only presents an optimized method for offshore gas development but also will help enhance Malaysia's position as a leader in the low-carbon energy sector." Ahn Young-gyu, Head of Samsung Heavy Industries' Offshore Business Division, emphasized, "Samsung Heavy Industries has secured orders for 5 out of 9 FLNGs ordered worldwide, demonstrating our competitiveness. We are confident that PFLNG TIGA will become a new benchmark for offshore plants."
