Public Preview Version Released... Korean Language Supported
Free for Individual Users... Based on Gemini 2.0
Available in Various Development Environments such as Github and VSCode
Google Cloud announced on the 26th that it has released the public preview version of Gemini Code Assist for individuals for free. According to Google Cloud, Gemini Code Assist allows all developers to use AI coding features in various development environments without any cost burden.
Gemini Code Assist for individuals operates based on Google's AI model Gemini 2.0, which is optimized for coding by learning from real coding cases. It supports all programming languages without copyright restrictions.
Developers can input commands in various languages, including Korean, to write code using Gemini Code Assist. For example, a web developer can generate code for implementing a web page simply by requesting, "Create an HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) form with fields for name, email, and message, then add a 'Submit' button." Repetitive tasks can also be automated by asking Gemini, such as "Write code to send an email with the daily latest weather forecast."
Another strength is the nearly unlimited usage limit. Gemini Code Assist can complete up to 180,000 codes per month, which is generous compared to the monthly limit of around 2,000 cases for competing services. Additionally, it provides a chat context window supporting up to 128,000 tokens. This allows developers to work with large files and easily understand the overall structure of the code.
Gemini Code Assist, provided by Google Cloud, generates code based on natural language prompts and applies changes to existing code.
Furthermore, Google Cloud also released the public preview version of Gemini Code Assist for Github. This service supports AI-based code reviews for both public and private repositories on Github for free. Github is a distributed version control system (VCS) platform that stores program source code online and serves as a kind of cloud service for developers.
Gemini Code Assist for Github detects errors in written code and automatically suggests fixes. It also provides basic code reviews, allowing developers to focus only on complex tasks.
In addition, Gemini Code Assist is available for free on Visual Studio Code and JetBrains IDE, which are widely used integrated development environments (IDEs). Support in these IDEs enables developers to utilize code generation and chat features. It is also available for free on Firebase and Android Studio, IDEs used for mobile application development.
The number of developers receiving AI assistance during programming is steadily increasing. According to the latest report from Google Cloud DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA), over 75% of developers use AI in their daily work. More than 25% of Google's new code is generated by AI and then reviewed and approved by engineers.
Jigi Seong, President of Google Cloud Korea, said, "By using Gemini Code Assist for individuals, anyone can complete coding projects faster and more professionally for free," adding, "Google Cloud will bridge the technology gap and foster a developer ecosystem so that all developers can have excellent AI tools to demonstrate their capabilities."
Gemini Code Assist is available to anyone with a Gmail account. It can be installed and used in IDEs such as Github, Visual Studio Code (VSCode), and JetBrains IDE.
