A knife-wielding assailant who attacked a police officer in the middle of the night on Geumnam-ro Street in Dong-gu, Gwangju, was shot and killed by police.
According to Gwangju Dongbu Police Station on the 26th, at around 3:10 a.m. that day, Inspector A from Geumnam District Unit of Gwangju Dongbu Police Station was stabbed twice by B (51), who wielded a weapon in an alley near the Geumnamro 4-ga Station intersection in Dong-gu, Gwangju.
Inspector A used his firearm while subduing B, and B, who was hit by live ammunition, was transported to a university hospital but died around 4 a.m.
Inspector A also suffered injuries around his neck and underwent emergency surgery, but it has been reported that his life is not in danger at this time.
Earlier, police had responded to a 112 emergency call reporting that "two women are being chased by an unidentified man while returning home."
When confronted by police on the street, the unidentified man, B, took a weapon out of his bag and began to threaten the officers in a frenzy.
Despite repeated warnings from police, B refused to put down the weapon, so officers fired a Taser. When the Taser missed, they fired one blank round and three live rounds.
B attacked Inspector A twice, and it has been tentatively determined that the live rounds were fired at close range.
The police are investigating the exact circumstances of the incident.
