A knife-wielding assailant who attacked a police officer on an early morning street was shot and killed.
According to Yonhap News, at around 3:10 a.m. on the 26th, Sergeant A of the Geumnam Police Substation, Dongbu Police Station in Gwangju, was stabbed twice by Mr. B (51) near the alley by the Geumnam-ro 4-ga Station intersection in Geumnam-ro, Dong-gu, Gwangju.
Sergeant A used his firearm while subduing Mr. B, who was hit by live rounds and transported to a university hospital but died around 4 a.m. Sergeant A also sustained severe injuries to his neck and face and is undergoing emergency surgery.
At the time, Sergeant A and a fellow police officer responded to a 112 call reporting that two women were being chased by an unidentified man while returning home. When Mr. B encountered the police on the street, he took out a weapon from a paper bag and threatened the officers while causing a disturbance.
The police repeatedly ordered Mr. B to drop the weapon, but when he refused, they fired a Taser. After the Taser missed, they fired warning shots. During this time, Mr. B attacked Sergeant A twice, and it is preliminarily reported that three live rounds were fired at close range while the two were entangled.
The police are investigating the exact circumstances, including the appropriateness of the firearm use.
